A new Department of the organisation ICOMOS is created in Lesvos in order to contribute to the protection of the cultural sites of the island. Lesvos, one of the largest cultural and commercial centres since the prehistoric times, with its very beautiful and unique nature reserves, its great history, witnessed by hundreds monuments, needs to be protected. Therefore, direct interventions have to be made by different institutions and organisations such as the ICOMOS(International Council of Monuments and Sites). Thus, after the positive proposal (6 July 2009) of the Administrative Council, the General Assembly of the Greek ICOMOS , approved the creation of the local department of the Greek ICOMOS in Lesvos.
